Eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy characterized by seizures in the setting of pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is diagnosed when repeated blood pressure measurements are greater or equal to 140/90mmHg, in addition to any signs of organ dysfunction, including: proteinuria, thrombocytopenia, renal insufficiency, impaired liver function, pulmonary edema, cerebral symptoms, or abdominal pain. Signs and symptoms of eclampsia include the characteristic high blood pressure and protein in the urine ( proteinuria ). Other associated symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, decreased urine output, altered mental status, and fluid in the lungs (known as pulmonary edema ).
